Biogeochemical observation to better understand and protect our ocean.

BioGeoSea Project Coordinator Toste Tanhua participated in the EuroGEO Marine & Coastal Action Group Workshop: Data to Intelligence – Co-creating Strategy with EU Initiatives, held in Geneva, Switzerland, on 6–7 July 2026. One of the main outcomes: The challenge is not only to collect the right observations, but also to connect people, disciplines, data, and users so that ocean knowledge can effectively support decision-making. This is exactly the vision behind the Essential Ocean Variables (EOV) Network, developed by EuroGOOS together with the three sister projects BioGeoSea, BioEcoOcean, and ObsSea4Clim.

The first annual meeting of the EU project BioGeoSea will be hosted at the GEOMAR in Kiel and takes place from 7-10 Sep 2026. Participation is by invitation only.

A new BioGeoSea study shows how automated, in-situ sensors can change our understanding of nutrient dynamics in coastal waters – and help inform better environmental management.
By using an in-situ nitrogen sensor, the study demonstrates that high-frequency measurements capture short-term variability that conventional monitoring programs often miss.
